New Lead Developer!

By Paul Beel on August 13th, 2008 / 1 Comment

Elisamuel “ryuji” Resto has been voted into Lead Developer status for the Source Mage GNU/Linux distribution. His hard work and dedication to the project has really earned him this title. I know he has helped Mage Power a ton and that is just one of the minor things he does. Congratulations to Elisamuel!

Release of 0.10.0-test3 ISO

By Elisamuel Resto on August 12th, 2008 / No Comments

Less than 24 hours after the release of the 0.10.0-test2 ISO, Justin “flux_control” Boffemmyer wrote to the mailinglist to let us know he has released 0.10.0-test3. This release, as he writes, is a bugfix release with a more appropriate kernel configuration to support more hardware than the previous one. Message follows.

“ISO 0.10.0-test3 is now released! It is currently being uploaded to the main download server, and will finish uploading in about 45 minutes, and then it will need another several hours to propagate across the mirrors.

This is a bugfix from test2. This release has a more appropriate kernel config. I would like to thank Andrew Stitt for bravely testing test2 so quickly, and helping me to find the bugs so I could squash them with oozing prejudice. This release will still need a lot of testing to ensure that the kernel config works for everyone’s hardware (I’m hoping this is the case, but it may not be; please remember that this is still a test release, so if it doesn’t boot, please don’t dream of murdering me in my sleep :-P).

The download url (which I forgot for test2) for 0.10.0-test3 is as follows:

Release of 0.10.0-test2 ISO

By Elisamuel Resto on August 11th, 2008 / 1 Comment

Justin “flux_control” Boffemmyer has posted to the sm-discuss mailinglist to announce the release of the 0.10.0-test2 ISO. This release combines fixes and improvements from the test1 run amongst other long-standing changes/bugs from the two ISO’s before test1. Message follows.

“I am currently uploading smgl-0.10.0-test2 to the main server. The upload will finish in approximately 45 minutes. After that, it will be another several hours before it propagates across the mirrors. Anyway, 0.10.0-test2 is now officially released.

PLEASE FILE BUG REPORTS.
************************

There are far too few bugs actually filed on bugs.sourcemage.org for the ISOs. The emails are nice, but much harder to track.

This release is mostly a bug-fix release. It fixes the following major issues from 0.10.0-test1:
* no more eth0-eth5 remappings and other oddities
* changes to the kernel config that hopefully will let it boot both without an initrd and boot on more hardware
* the formatting of the step instructions has been altered, hopefully improving readability
* the installer code logic has been improved a bit
* the ‘back’ command was renamed to ‘prev’, which is more in line with ‘next’

There were also some other minor bugfixes. Unfortunately improvements to the algorithm(s) for detecting the cdrom to install from in the initrd did not make it into this release, as improvements are still being researched. These improvements should make it into test3.”

Stable-rc 0.24 is cut and ready

By Elisamuel Resto on August 2nd, 2008 / No Comments

Arwed “alley_cat” von Merkatz has just announced to the sm-discuss mailinglist that stable-rc 0.24 has been cut and uploaded to the main distro server, mirrors should be syncing in the next few hours. His message follows.

“Hi everyone,

stable-rc 0.24 is cut and ready for testing. There’s the usual wiki page for those who want to help testing.

The release will be released on July 15th if nothing major gets in the way.

Tarballs have been created and are on the master server, should make it to the mirrors in a few hours.
The chroot for x86 is done and uploaded, volunteers for x86_64 are welcome.

As always don’t forget to file any bugs against our bug tracker so we can fix and integrate any bugs/issues.

Let’s give this new stable-rc a good testing!”
