stable-rc 0.27 is cut and ready for testing. There’s the usual wiki page[0] for those who want to help testing.

The release will be released on November 15th if nothing major gets in the way.

Tarballs have been created and are on the master server, should make it to the mirrors in a few hours.
I’m working on the x86 chroot, but it will probably not be ready until tomorrow evening, as I’m away for the weekend. Volunteers for x86_64 are welcome.

As always don’t forget to file any bugs against our bug tracker[1] so we can fix and integrate any bugs/issues.

Let’s give this new stable-rc a good testing!

Stable Sorcery 1.14.2 has been released! Notable bugs missing in this bugfix release include the one of repair file mishandling, usages of translations and the one of cast -O ignorance.

Important bug fixes for 0.10.0-test4 over 0.10.0-test3:
* (possibly) correctly boots SATA, SCSI, *and* IDE
* more correctly recognizes devices to boot from during initrd
* ability to override the initrd’s detection of boot device
* the directions for making a custom kernel include casting (in addition to the manual method)
* rp-pppoe and ppp are provided on the ISO for non-ethernet internet access
* parted is now actually provided instead of just listed as provided
* bash is linked against utf8 ncurses (really this time)

Users who experience problems booting the installed kernel are strongly encouraged try booting with a custom kernel (via the optional custom kernel step) and to submit bug reports that list:
1. The output of lsmod during the ISO install
2. Whether they are using grub or lilo

Users who experience display problems when booting the installed kernel (for example, their screen goes black) are advised to append “vga=normal” to their boot command-line (this can be done either each time they boot, or added to their boot-loader’s configuration).
Alternatively, they can build a custom kernel that does not include framebuffer support.

Users who want fancier consoles during the install can boot the ISO with other vga modes. If the user doesn’t know what modes are available, they can try booting the ISO with vga=ask, as shown below:

As always, we need as many testers as possible for this ISO, with as diverse hardware as possible. I strongly urge (I’d say “require” but I don’t hold that much sway over others) everyone who tests the ISO to file bug reports for anything that doesn’t work as expected.

Elisamuel Resto sent the following message about a brand new addition to the Tome Team.

“I’d like to share with everyone that Juan Carlos Torres (aka. Jucato) has joined the circle of mages, to become a scribe in the Tome Team… and help out with the KDE spells whenever there’s a chance to from his side.”

Jucato has been hanging out with us for quite some time and he finally decided to make it official.

Arwed “alley_cat” von Merkatz has announced to the sm-discuss mailinglist that stable-rc 0.25 has been cut and uploaded to the main distro servers.

One thing to note is that the recent merge of modualr Xorg was not included in this cycle, as there is a need to let it soak in test for at least a month before including in the stable release, to iron out obvious bugs. Arwed’s message follows.

This time, the Tome team has gotten some attention. The nominations are now closed and voting has been called forth by our trusty vote machine Andraž “ruskie” Levstik. The only nominee this time around is myself, Elisamuel “ryuji” Resto.

As usual, users of stable merely need to run ’sorcery system-update’. Spells listed on the 0.24 release wiki were tested and qualified to have no known defects of “gating” severity at the time of this release. The tarballs have been signed and uploaded to our server and will be propogating out to the mirrors within six hours.
